Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and instilled by art. The actress worked as a late night nurse to allow her aunt time that she required during the day to indulge in theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote political activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and advised DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced iconic civil rights demonstration through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was were later the inspiration to create a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was drawn to journalistic broadcasting while in school. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury, and then examine their junk. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she chose to go into the public relations business. DuVernay began her first position as a PR professional in an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also established a range of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
